about

From Hugh Trimble & The Atomic Ranch Band's forthcoming, self-titled, debut album (April 7th).

A personal note about the song from Hugh:

It's hard to stay hopeful these days. I scroll through the news and see a world on fire, waters rising, old wounds, new violence ... Who wouldn't think we're living in the End Times? But then suddenly I'm startled out of my nihilism and fear by a beautiful spectacle of humanity. It can be something small and fleeting: a busker's lyric, seeing someone be kind when they don't know I'm looking, a stranger laughing in a passing car, the sounds of a child imagining worlds on a playground. Or it can be something enormous and earth-shaking ... like falling in love. Despite all my apocalyptic fear, when I approach the world around me, when I really look you in the eye, I can't deny a deep feeling of rightness. It comes and goes, but I'm going to do my best to amplify all the grace I come by. Thanks for listening.

lyrics

Everybody knows it’s over
Before we’re asked to leave
The city’s holding hot October
Like a mourner hugging her knees
Everybody knows it’s over
Except for you and me

I’ve seen you looking over your shoulder
At the fires through the trees
I hope that you and I remember
How the weather used to be
Because everybody’s saying it’s over
It’s over finally

Why do I feel so high every time that I breathe
I’ve been saying goodbye ever since I could speak
I just wanted some time to find a bed for my sleep
Why do I feel so high every time that I breathe

I’ve never known the wine taste better
Than in this nervous early Spring
The number you have dialed is no longer
In service to the King
Because everybody knows it’s over
But never you and me

Why does it feel so right all these people I see
Have you been saving my life as I’ve been trying to leave
You’re like a ship in the night I’ve been dying to meet
Why does it feel so right all these people I see

Why do I feel so high every time that I breathe
I’ve been saying goodbye ever since I could speak
I just wanted some time to make a bed for my sleep
Why do I feel so high every time that I breathe

Everybody knows it’s over Except for you and me

Hugh Trimble is a folk songwriter and storyteller based in Nashville, Tennessee. Born in Eastern Europe to American journalists, his career as a musician began as a New York City busker. His style has driven comparisons to the folk heavyweights of the 60s, but critics have lauded a voice that reinvents (rather than recalls) the genre. Hugh goes electric in his newest project, THE ATOMIC RANCH BAND ... more
